Service Description
We’re excited to introduce Calligraphy & Tea, a new weekly Thursday evening workshop at the NYTS Tea Studio – Ktown, where mindful movement, art, and tea come together in a warm, welcoming space. NYTS founder Roy Lamberty will keep the tea flowing throughout the evening, setting the tone with beautifully brewed tea as you practice calligraphy under the guidance of Yukiko Koyama. Yukiko is a Japanese calligrapher who blends tradition, creativity, and mindfulness into every stroke. Born in Yokohama, Japan, she began practicing calligraphy at just 8 years old, learning at home with her mother. By age 9, she had already won a gold prize in her elementary school’s calligraphy contest, a moment that inspired her to continue formal training for the next five years. Her journey later took a transformative turn in New York, where she studied under a master and discovered calligraphy from an entirely new perspective—one rooted deeply in meditation, presence, and inner stillness. With over 20 years of experience, Yukiko holds a 5th Dan certification from the Nihon Shuji Foundation and continues her studies with Chinese calligraphy master Mr. Li, bringing a rare and beautiful cross-cultural depth to her work. As Yukiko says: “Writing calligraphy with a brush means putting your heart into the characters. Before we start writing, we make ink — which itself is a great meditation.” Whether you’re completely new or returning to the brush, this workshop is an invitation to slow down, focus, and connect—with yourself, with the art, and with a cup of thoughtfully prepared tea.
